REPORTS TO:  

Upper School Director

 

JOB CLASSIFICATION:

Non-Exempt Position

JOB PURPOSE:

The Substitute Upper School Teacher is a temporary position to provide continuity of instruction for students in Grades 9-12 when a teacher is absent. The Substitute Upper School Teacher is hired on a daily basis or for a limited term.

 

The Substitute Upper School Teacher will model the GDS Community Cornerstones of Respect, Kindness, Integrity, and Responsibility.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaches up to 5 sections of an academic subject
  • Leads a club during the dedicated club period
  • Proctors a study hall (if assigned)
  • Advises 12-18 students during the dedicated advisory period
  • Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of all students
  • Manages the classroom with safety and security as the top priority
  • Completes non-academic tasks as necessary (break duty, lunch duty, carpool, etc.).

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Classroom experience preferred
  • Understanding or experience in independent schools preferred

 

Working Conditions

Daily work requires supervising students both indoors and outdoors.  Faculty are required to participate in regular safety drills, learn CPR, learn how to apply a tourniquet, provide basic first aid, administer epi-pens when needed, and be able to support other student-specific health-related needs. Some weekend, evening, or early morning work may be required from time to time.

 

Physical Requirements

All teachers must be able to provide adequate supervision indoors and outdoors, and they must be able to ensure the safety of students during drills and emergencies that may arise from time to time. The position may require prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, standing to teach, and working on a computer. Teachers must be able to lift up to 15 pounds. Teachers must also be able to traverse the classroom and adjust one's tone and height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child.
