Position Summary: The Transition Learning Support Program is dedicated to empowering students with diagnosed learning differences, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. We aim to guide students toward their academic goals through tailored lessons and explicit instruction in executive functioning. This is accomplished through the implementation of research-based strategies and a responsive classroom experience carefully curated for each student's unique strengths and needs. Beyond an educational initiative, the Transition program bridges the gap between diagnosed learning differences and academic success. The Transition program is a community committed to educational innovation. We empower students to embrace unique learning journeys. We cultivate independent, confident learners by providing them with tools and strategies for success in every facet of their lives. Together, we build a future where every student can thrive, irrespective of their learning differences. This position involves a long-term substitute teaching position for 6th-grade English Language Arts and Social Studies classes in our Transition program.
 
 
Specific Duties Include:
  • Instructing students in subject content, along with reading and grading student work
  • Demonstrating a high level of responsiveness to students
  • Managing student behavior in a manner that optimizes the learning environment
  • Maintain regular communication with students and their parents regarding progress
  • Working cooperatively with other grade-level teachers to implement common course syllabi and assessments 
  • Ensure continuity of instruction and maintain a productive learning environment in the regular teacher's absence by following lesson plans and managing classroom activities.

Required Skills:
  • Have a working knowledge and experience teaching Lower School students (grades 4-6)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrating tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to leverage technology, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Google apps, language lab software, and interactive whiteboard technology 
  • A solid understanding of learning challenges, as well as the accommodations and differentiated learning techniques to support such challenges
  • Strong organizational and classroom management skills
  • Experience with proficiency-based instruction in an immersive environment preferred 
 
Minimum Job Qualifications: 
  • Undergraduate degree in Education from an accredited institution of higher learning; master’s degree in education preferred
  • 2+ years of successful teaching preferred
  • Independent school experience preferred, but not required
 
 
The Long-Term Substitute, Lower School Transition position is an exempt, 10-month position.
