Role Focus:

 

Washington Episcopal School seeks a Controller to begin immediately. The Controller will be an integral part of the Business Office, responsible for coordinating with and assisting the CFOO in the preparation of financial reports such as income statement, balance sheet, statements of cash flows, and analysis of investments, in addition to other special reports as needed. The Controller helps supervise the accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing operations and Human Resources, including payroll. 

 

Reporting directly to the CFOO, the Controller is also responsible for recommending and administering all accounting policies and procedures, ensuring that strong internal controls and effective transaction processing routines protect the assets of the school and result in meaningful, timely, and accurate financial reporting.

 

Education And Experience:

 

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in accounting, CPA preferred, with a minimum of 5 years of expertise in non-profit accounting, ideally in an independent school or higher education setting.  This position requires strong organization, attention to detail, written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.  Strong proficiency with Excel, Office and other computerized accounting systems is required (experience with Blackbaud Smart Tuition and QuickBooks highly beneficial).  Highest regard for confidentiality and exemplary ethical standards is necessary, as well as the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects under the pressure of deadlines.  

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Supervise and assist with accounts receivable, payroll, HR, and student billing in the Business Office.  
    • Ensure accurate and timely financial information and reporting, including all financial statements, cash and variance analyses, and dashboard reports.
    • Perform bank and investment reconciliations.
    • Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly.
    • Maintain accurate and appropriate general ledger chart of accounts.
    • Actively stay current on new regulations in GAAP and relevant non-profit accounting issues.
    • Provide support for the CFOO in preparations for Finance Committee meetings or other Board-related meetings.
    • Coordinate with the CFOO on the preparation, review and filing of IRS Forms 5500 and 990 with outside auditors.
    • Crucial team member for annual financial audit prep work. 
    • Assist with periodic surveys for various school industry organizations

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range:  $120,000 – 135,000
