Job Title: Short/Long-Term Substitute Teacher

Department: Academics – Learning & Teaching

Reports To: Academic Director and Dean of the Academy. 

Hours: 7:30 AM until 3:30 PM. If on duty, report time is 7:15 AM.



Position Overview: 

Our teachings come from a Biblical worldview, and we strive to live out God’s word through our programming and daily activities. Our academic program is rigorous, and we set the same standards for our spiritual and intellectual maturity. We begin each day with prayer, and we weave the teachings of Jesus throughout classroom activities.

 

In the absence of the regular classroom teacher, this position requires an individual to help students learn the subject matter and/or skills that are required for scheduled lessons and to provide meaningful instruction for assigned classrooms.

 

Education & Experience Requirements: 

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Experience working in an elementary school setting is required.
  • Punctual, Reliable, and Dependable

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.
  • Assign classroom, as applicable, prescribed by the teacher.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned.
  • Incorporate instructional methods to help ensure learning targets are achieved.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly classroom. Straighten chairs, tables, clear chalkboards, etc.
  • Take attendance in accordance with school procedures.
  • Become familiar with the emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by Academic Director, or Dean of the 

Academy.

 

Required Skills: 

  • Communication skills - ability to read and interpret documents, and to write routine correspondence.  Must be able to clearly provide both written and oral information.
  • Reasoning - ability to apply common sense understanding and to carry out instructions in both written or oral form.  Ability to establish appropriate priorities in the workflow.
  • Computer skills - must demonstrate competency with basic word processing, spreadsheets, and the Internet.

 

 

Physical Demands:

When performing activities throughout the day related to the educating of students, the teacher spends most of the day standing in the classroom. He or she must walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver between desks, etc. Dealing with the students can entail kneeling or squatting, stooping, and bending from 50-70 degrees at the waist on an occasional to frequent basis. After receiving bus and safety training by AYA Operations, the teacher must be able to transport their class to and from field trips on our small passenger buses.

 

Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects (textbooks, materials, desks, chairs, etc.). The teacher must see and hear on a continuous basis as well as speak frequently. Positions may vary from standing, sitting, or walking. On a rare occasion it may be necessary to move quickly, run, etc. over smooth to uneven surfaces such as on asphalt, on the playground, or on the grass.

The Substitute Teacher is a temporary position and is paid according to a set daily rate.
