Middle School Science Teacher

Position Overview: The Science Teacher provides instruction and guidance to help students explore and understand important concepts in science, including problem-solving and how to gather evidence to support ideas or decisions. The Science Teacher will create lesson plans, present science demonstrations, and grade tests and assignments. The Science Teacher will explore experiential opportunities outside of the classroom or AYA campus. This Science Teacher opportunity is for grades 6th thru 8th.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Candidates with at least three years of teaching experience are preferred. Qualified applicants must have a degree in science, or a related field. Candidates with advanced degrees and at least three years of teaching experience in a college preparatory setting are preferred. Individuals must demonstrate a love for children, a thorough knowledge of the academic content area (Science: Life, Earth or Physical), curriculum design and classroom management skills, the ability to motivate and inspire students, and the ability to communicate effectively with parents, other teachers and administrators, both in person and in writing. The applicant should be comfortable with, and effectively instruct project-based learning and hands-on science experiences. The applicant must collaborate with other classroom teachers.

Physical Demands:
When performing activities throughout the day related to the educating of students, the teacher spends most of the day standing in the classroom. He or she must walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver between desks, etc. Dealing with the students can entail kneeling or squatting, stooping, and bending from 50-70 degrees at the waist on an occasional to frequent basis.
Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects (textbooks, materials, desks, chairs, etc.). The teacher must see and hear on a continuous basis as well as speak frequently. Positions may vary from standing, sitting, or walking. On a rare occasion it may be necessary to move quickly, run, etc. over smooth to uneven surfaces such as on asphalt, on the playground, or on the grass.
