Position Summary
The College Counseling Department oversees all matters of college placement and academic counseling. This position reports to the Director of College Counseling and works closely with the Head of Upper School and Grade Chairs in coordinating all aspects of academic planning and college admissions as well as advising students/parents throughout the college admissions process.

Essential Position Duties

  • Oversees all aspects of the college counseling program
  • Collaborates with and guides in academic advising including course selection, course requirements, and credit analysis as it impacts the college admission process 
  • Analyzes all standardized testing scores and assists students and faculty with utilizing these scores in course selection/placement
  • Coordinates and develops ongoing communication/professional relationships with college admission personnel
  • Meets with college admission officers who visit the Pulaski Academy campus
  • Attends college invitations for counselor breakfasts, campus visitations, and campus tours
  • Confers with students and parents continually during the college admissions process  
  • Keeps faculty informed about current trends/special issues that relate to college admissions
  • Supports faculty in writing college recommendations for rising seniors
  • Works with Grade Chairs/Athletics to identify prospective scholarship nominees/student-athletes
  • Works with the faculty/department chairs to monitor the student’s academic progress and address concerns
  • Oversees all nominations for merit scholarships and college awards
  • Updates the Pulaski Academy College Profile on an annual basis 
  • Stays current in the profession by attending conferences/meetings within professional organizations (NACAC, SACAC, etc.)
  • Meets individually with each junior and senior family in a college planning conference
  • Works closely with coaches and maintains scholarship files/athletic recruitment information
  • Coordinates the annual college tours
  • Assists with data collection on PA student’s college search results

Requirements

 

  • Master’s degree and Independent School or college/university admissions counselor experience preferred
  • Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Exhibits exceptional writing and organizational skills
  • Stays current on college admission/scholarship trends and “summer opportunities” being offered
  • Remains accessible and serves as a resource to faculty, students, and parents
  • Monitors and supports students/parents throughout the college admissions process
  • Encourages students to pursue merit awards, scholarship/athletic opportunities
  • Stays current on curricular requirements at the state and national level
  • Attends athletic functions; attends theater productions/Fine Arts events that have students with ‘special talents’ for scholarship; attends other school functions with students participating.
