Position Summary
Reporting to the Head of Upper School, the Assistant Head is a member of the Upper School Leadership team and is responsible for providing informal coaching and mentorship to faculty, especially on leadership and student conduct. The ideal candidate is a firm disciplinarian whose actions are anchored in fairness, accountability, and restoration. This position works closely with the leadership team, faculty, students, staff, and parents to lead a vibrant student life program that nurtures resilient, resourceful, and ethical student leaders. This position primarily implements and enforces the disciplinary policy, coordinates programs with other departments, meets with students who have exhibited poor conduct, and resolves concerns accordingly. The Assistant Head of Upper School supports faculty academically and may assist with faculty observations, promoting student engagement and instructional improvement.
Essential Position Duties
- Oversees student behavior and discipline management. Resolves discipline problems in a fair manner
- Helps students reach their full potential through commitment, creativity, and enthusiasm and plays an active role in the admissions process by arranging shadow visits and interviewing candidates
- Works collaboratively to develop and implement school-wide programs that reinforce accountability, school culture, values, and participation
- Assists the Head of Upper School in fielding and responding to parent and/or student concerns and assumes responsibility when the Head of Upper School is not available
- Provides updates to faculty and staff to ensure consistent communication and accountability
- Collaboratively oversees and assigns student lockers, advisories, study halls, clubs, student leadership, faculty duties, etc.
- Ensures safety and emergency preparedness for the Upper School
- Demonstrates enthusiastic commitment to maintaining and facilitating a positive school culture by supporting extra-curricular and athletic events through attendance and supervision
May also collaboratively assist with:
- Scheduling academic courses, observing faculty and providing constructive feedback
- Faculty evaluations and the hiring of new faculty
- Oversees and facilitates communication between faculty, staff and parents
- Planning daily activities, special events, transportation, etc.
- Be willing and able to teach a class if needed
Requirements
- Advanced degree (masters level) in education preferred
- Superior organizational skills and the ability to work with a high level of consistency and integrity
- Leadership experience in an independent school setting
- Teaching experience
- Highly developed communication skills, both verbal and written
- Possesses a great sense of humor and optimism along with an unbridled faith in students’ ability to learn and grow
- Coaching experience and ability to coach preferred
