Job Description

The Friends School of Atlanta is seeking a Director of Finance to oversee and provide leadership, oversight, and stewardship for all aspects of the school’s financial operations, including management of business office staff. The Director of Finance serves as a member of the Leadership Team (senior administrative team). 

The Director of Finance reports to the Head of School and is supported by other members of the leadership team and school community, including the board of trustees . This is a 12-month position that starts July 1, 2024. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in fiscal management, budgeting, and accounting, preferably in an educational or nonprofit setting.
  • Strong knowledge of benefits administration, HR principles, employment laws, and best practices.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in financial software, spreadsheet applications, and HR management systems.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides the Board of Trustees, Head of School and Leadership Team with leadership, vision, evaluation, and reporting on long range and annual plans. 
  • Manage business office operations, business office staff and cash flow. 
  • Complies with formal financial reporting requirements. 
  • Oversees school financial records and prepares monthly reports for the Head of School and Finance Committee. 
  • Member of Leadership Team, Finance Committee and Board of Trustees (ex-officio). 
  • Prepares financial records and reconciliations for the annual independent audit. 
  • Manages and oversees all Human Resources activities to include payroll, benefits, 403(b) retirement plan and plan administrator, leave time, and other matters related to human resources. 
  • Provides risk management and ensures adequate insurance coverage for liability and asset protection, including directors & officers coverage. 
  • Provides support to the Director of Enrollment to ensure that financial aid processes  and awards follow the financial aid policy. 
  • Reconciles and maintains all bank accounts. Secures cash flow by transferring funds between accounts as needed and in consultation with the Head of School. 
  • Assists Head of School in formulation of operating budgets, recommendations for tuition changes, scholarships, salaries, and benefits. 
  • Assists the Head with continuing development of policies and procedures related to employee-employer relations and benefits. 
  • Attends appropriate meetings of the Board of Trustees, Parent/Teacher meetings, faculty meetings and other assigned meetings at the discretion of the Head of School. 
  • Maintains landlord-tenant relationships. 
  • Manages and coordinates building and facilities issues with the Director of Buildings and Grounds and the Head of School. 
  • Follows the policies and procedures in the Parent and Faculty and Staff Personnel Orientation Handbooks. 
  • Attends all faculty/staff meetings unless excused in advance by the Head of School. 
  • Holds in confidence issues relating to other faculty, staff, students, and parents. Information may need to be shared among other faculty/staff for the well-being of the student. 
  • Performs other appropriately assigned tasks by the Head of School.
